British Grand Prix -
"Barrichello moves ahead"

Ferrari’s Rubens
Barrichello set the pace at Barcelona on Thursday as Formula One
testing continued in the run-up to the British Grand Prix on July
20.
Barrichello recorded a best time of 1m 17.803s after more than 100
laps of the Spanish track, as the Ferrari team continued its
programme of testing new aerodynamic components and tyres.
Michael Schumacher was also in action for the world champions,
bringing their three-day programme at Mugello in Italy to a close.
Schumacher carried out electronics and tyre testing, completing a
total of 85 laps (including nine on the short version of the track),
with a best time of 1m 21.942s.
Back at Barcelona it was Williams who were closest to Ferrari’s
pace, with Marc Gene second fastest (1m 18.047s), under a quarter of
a second behind Barrichello after 125 laps. Wednesday’s leader, Ralf
Schumacher, was third quickest on a 1m 18.397s.
Jordan wrapped up their two-day Barcelona programme with Ralph
Firman an impressive fourth fastest (1m 18.412s), despite some minor
technical problems interrupting his running, which focussed
primarily on Bridgestone tyre development and set-up work.
For Toyota, Olivier Panis took over testing duties from team mate
Cristiano da Matta. The team divided its time between tyre
comparisons and evaluating an upgraded aerodynamic package for the
TF103. Panis ended the day fifth fastest (1m 18.659s), edging out
McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen (1m 18.738s) and Jaguar’s Mark Webber (1m
18.787s).
At McLaren, while Raikkonen ran in the MP4-17, it was left to David
Coulthard and tester Alexander Wurz to continue development of the
long-awaited MP4-18. Coulthard was more than a second off
Raikkonen’s pace (13th, 1m 20.093s) after 45 laps, while Wurz failed
to record a time after managing just seven laps.
A third day of running for Sauber saw Nick Heidfeld go ninth
quickest (1m 19.479s). The Swiss team got through a wide programme
of work, including testing a new front suspension layout, three
different front wings and tyres for Silverstone, plus evaluating
several new front and rear dampers.
Jenson Button (10th, 1m 19.510s) and Jacques Villeneuve (12th,
1m20.010s) put in close to 100 laps each for BAR, while Renault’s
Allan McNish racked up another 99, despite engine problems cutting
short his tyre testing programme.
Multi-team testing continues at Barcelona on Friday, while Michael
Schumacher and Ferrari will also be at work at Fiorano.
